Natural Oil Polyols (NOP)

AFEXTM

AFEXTM are unique functional natural oil polyols used in producing polyurethane coating, adhesives, sealants and foam. These products are made from plant oils such as tung, linseed, soybean, corn, peanut and canola oils. They have hydroxyl groups and/or unsaturated double bonds depending upon whether the original oils are drying, semi-drying or non-drying in nature. The hydroxyl group functionality of AFEXTM can be from one to three; and the molecular weight can be low to high depending upon the application.

Description:

HNO products are hydroxylated fixed plant oils

Hydroxyl functionality (OHF) of 1.0 - 3.0

Made using any selected oil or any combination of plant oils

Molecular weight (MW) range of 300 - 2,000

Contains up to 89% natural oil, MW and OHF will determine actual oil %

Improves bonding, mechanical properties and water resistance

Compatible with traditional petrochemical polyols

Application:

  • AFEXTM HNO (Polyol)

The preparation of polyurethane products including coatings, adhesives, sealants, foams, composites and other polyurethane based materials can be produced using AAFEXTM-HNO polyol.

  • AFEXTM HNO (Initiator)

Utilized as an initiator in the ring opening polymerization of propylene oxide to prepare HNO-based polypropylene glycol (PPG) or polycaprolactone (PCL). AFEXTM-HNO can replace conventional initiators (glycerol, ethylene glycol...etc.) made from petrochemicals. The resultant HNO-PPG or HNO-PCL will have a long side chain with an ester group, a double bond or conjugated double bond and an oil structure.

  • AFEXTM HNO (Aliphatic Epoxy Resin)

Conventional aliphatic diols made from petrochemicals can be replaced with AFEXTM-HNO. The chemical structure of AFEXTM-HNO provides for improved adhesive strength and flexibility while decreasing viscosity and cost.

  • AFEXTM HNO (HNO-Based Acrylates or Methacrylates)

New HNO-acrylic or methacrylic monomers can be used to carry out the polymerization to produce HNO-polyacrylates or polymethacrylates.

  • AFEXTM HNO (Surfactant)

HNO with OHF = 1 can be reacted with ethylene oxide to produce nonionic surfactants.

Tung Oil – Soybean Oil
TSB23C

AFEXTM TSB23C is a functional oil that combines tung and soybean oils. It has both two and three hydroxyl groups (2.3 average functionalities) and three conjugated double bonds. The conjugated double bonds will be opened by oxidation through the oxygen resulting in potential crosslinking reaction.

It has the following typical characteristics:

Appearance Transparent liquid
Color (Gardner) 7 ~ 9
Odor Tung and soybean oils
Viscosity - cps 1100 + 100
Weight per Gallon lbs
Non-volatile %
Density - g/ml (25 C)
Equivalent weight (on OH) 148
Functionality 2.3
Solubility in Water Insoluble
Solubility in Ethanol Soluble
Solubility in Acetone Soluble
Solubility in Other organic solvents Soluble
Reactivity with Isocyanates Reacting
Reactivity with Melamine Reacting
Reactivity with Anhydrides Reacting
Reactivity with Oxygen Reacting

APPLICATIONS

AFEXTM TSB23C can be used as a raw material or an additive in the preparation of coatings, adhesives, sealants, foams and composites based on the urethane or melamine chemistry. The three conjugated double bonds imply that the products made with AFEXTM TSB23C can be self crosslinked by the oxygen in air resulting in improvement of chemical and water resistance.
